    Girls’ Football Competition

Our girls’ football team did us proud!

In Group B they had to play four games to determine which two teams would go forward to the Quarter Finals. In their group they played Mesty Croft and beat them 1 – 0, St John Bosco and drew 0 – 0, St Paul’s and beat them 4 – 0 and finally St Phillips whom they drew 0 – 0 with. The girls gained 3 points for a win and 1 point for a draw, which gave them a total of 8 points. This put them level on points with St Phillips however, the girls finished second in their group only on goal difference (6 – 5).

The team advanced to the Quarter Finals and played the winners of Group A (Cape Primary). They had a really talented player, however our girls closed them down at every avenue and stepped up their own game to defeat them 2 – 0.

They were now on to the Semi Finals where their opponents Grove Vale had been taking care of their opposition in pretty fine style. Our girls dug a little deeper and pulled off an amazing draw against a very well drilled side. Due to the fact that both teams were skilled at taking spot kicks, the girls had to go to a sudden death shoot out. Eventually our team got through to the Finals – especially after a great save from Haleema!

It was now showdown time versus St Phillips. Haleema hadn’t let a single goal in during the opening play. Just at that moment the ball trickled through her legs and gave the opposition an undeserved lead. Our girls came storming back with quite possibly, the most powerful and fiercest shot of the day to equalise! Take a bow Zariah. Unfortunately, the goals stopped there – so the gold medal had to be decided on penalties!

We took two penalties, both of which, were saved by their goalkeeper and their two shots were put past a valiant Haleema. So the girls were denied gold but we performed more than well on the day!

The girls played fantastically well throughout and battled hard to take their silver medals. Mr Blackwood was exceptionally proud of the team as are all children and staff at VPA! The fact that the girls only had four training sessions made this an absolute gem of a performance!

    Many Congratulations!
