Reading Scheme for KS1- High Frequency Words

High Frequency Words are quite simply those words which occur most frequently in written material, for example, ‘and’, ‘the’, ‘as’ and ‘it’. They are often words which have little meaning on their own, but they do contribute a great deal to the meaning of a sentence.

At VPA, the children in Foundation Stage and Year 1 will be learning these words. By the end of KS1, children are expected to be able to read all of the first 100 high frequency words recommended in the Letters and Sounds phonics programme.
