Recently, Year 4 were treated to a visit from Freshwater Theatre Company to help them to prepare for their new topic for this half term (Time Travelers/The Egyptians).
The children and staff in Year 4 soon discovered that the time traveler was an explorer from Ancient Egypt and had come to ask for Yr 4’s help. The traveler had been subjected to a curse whereby, whenever she hummed, she accidentally blurted out the word “Mummy”! The children had decided that it was time for the explorer to face her fears – it was time to face the afterlife just like Mummies have to.
The children adopted roles within the classes, these consisted of: a Pharaoh, an embalmer and a priest who performed a perfect mummification… but that was just the beginning. The real journey was to guide the spirit to the afterlife where it could reunite with its body for eternity. Other roles needed to be introduced from Anubis (God of the Dead) to scary snakes and terrifying Monsters!
Step by step, Yr 4 used their collaboration and absorption tools to act out trials for the spirit. Finally, the spirit’s heart was weighed against the feather of trust to see if it was lighter – it was and so the spirit finally made it to the afterlife to enjoy eternal peace.
Job done? Oh no, not quite! The explorer was still suffering from her curse… but what else could be done to help her? Perhaps the exploration of a tomb and the finding of some wonderful artefacts might do the trick?
Year 4 conducted an exploration and found more treasures than they knew what to do with. They examined each artefact carefully and placed them in their own mini-museum for the explorer to look at, almost instantaneously she was cured!
The whole of Year 4 enjoyed a fantastic morning of role-play and discovery using their absorption, imagining and collaboration tools to learn lots about Ancient Egypt.
