Based on Reception’s NICER topic ‘ A Real World’ and their challenge ‘How can we tell a story’; Reception children and staff visited Smethwick Library on 26th and 27th February. Parents were also invited and could choose to either walk with their children or to meet at them at the library.
Upon arriving at the library, the children were taken to the ‘Children’s Area’ and then split into groups. One activity was geared around children and adults getting used to using the library system and being able to find books in alphabetical order. Another task was set up to help the children to locate information books; the children were then challenged to find a book based on a specific topic. This activity and its findings was later linked to the children’s literacy tasks.
The children also visited the archives section of the library, where they learned about the history of Smethwick. The children and their families looked at old photographs and learned about the changes in Smethwick especially that of the shopping habits ranging from a selection of local shops to larger supermarkets such as ASDA and Tesco.
Before their visit ended, each child was issued with their own library card and was able to use the self-scan device to enable them to take out their own library book.
This visit will be followed up by a class book review.
