Victoria Park Academy and several other Sandwell schools were invited to Shireland Collegiate Academy to participate in an Indoor Athletics Competition. The athletes went through a sorting process which highlighted certain children’s abilities based on previous performances during PE and sporting activities. In order for the children to have an idea of what event they were going to participate in, Mr Blackwood VPA’s P.E. co-ordinator, held a brief practise session and each child was assigned their event. Unfortunately, there was only time for one other practise session; but the children were encouraged to practice their discipline in their own time.

On the day of the competition, the children were accompanied by Miss Akhtar and Mrs Rose. The events they were taking part in consisted of: running and relay races, speed bouncing, standing long and triple jumps, javelin, chest pass, standing high jump and obstacle races.

Our children, although finishing 4th, can hold their heads up very high knowing that they gave as much as they could throughout the whole competition! They were true competitors and showed great resolve and fighting spirit!

Mr Blackwood would have liked to have been there to cheer on our athletes and he has said that he is looking forward to future competitions where VPA children will be competing against others with their fantastic ‘Never say die’ attitudes!

Well done to all of the children who took part and who were brilliant ambassadors for our school.
