Acorns Children’s Hospice Trust was established in 1988 and Birmingham’s branch is situated in Selly Oak, 3 miles south of the City centre. Acorns is a registered charity offering a network of care for life limited and life threatened children and young people, and their families, across the heart of England. These children and young people are not expected to reach adulthood and require specialist care 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Acorns is currently supporting around 640 children and nearly 900 families, including those who are bereaved.

Acorns is the only organisation that provides this level of care to these vulnerable youngsters whilst offering a range of support services to the whole family to help them cope at every stage of their child’s life and beyond into bereavement.

The organisation provides tailored nursing care for each child; short breaks, emergency and end of life care at each of their three hospices.

Around Christmastime, two of our Year 6 students were very keen to help raise some money for a charitable organisation. Amidst all of the Christmas celebrations their thoughts turned towards children who were less fortunate than themselves. Asad and Kashif from Class 6W organised our ‘Crazy Jumper Day’.

On Friday 20th December 2013, Children and staff were invited to wear a crazy/colourful jumper and donate money to this worthy cause. A child, wearing the craziest jumper, from every class was chosen and in a special Christmas assembly an overall winner from KS 1 and KS 2 was chosen. Prizes were awarded to our winners and to the most craziest ‘teacher’ jumper too!

A healthy £280 was raised and on Thursday 23rd January Asad and Kashif travelled over to Acorns to present them with the money we had raised.

What a fabulous idea to help others in need – thank you and well done all!
