To enhance the children’s baking skills the idea of the first VPA ‘Bake Off’ was born. The event was a weeklong task linked to the theme of the school’s ‘Big Adventure’ incorporating individual class projects. The children were asked to research their ideas for producing their cakes using the TASC (Thinking Actively in a Social Context) wheel. This world-famous thinking skills framework is used in thousands of schools to support the development of independent, creative thinking and personalised learning, to raise standards and to embed inclusive practice.

The classes were all given the same basic ingredients to help to make their cakes but could add whatever they wanted to make it more exciting! There was also a series of icing workshops organised where the children could learn different ways to decorate their cakes. Thank you to Mrs J Biggs for leading the icing workshops and to Aunt Fanny’s Bakery & Lisa’s Wedding Emporium (Birmingham Street, Oldbury) for supplying the icing free of charge.

The judging took place on Friday 20th September, four impartial, distinguished judges tasted and deliberated over the appearance, texture and taste of 15 cakes. There were no soggy bottoms but did the class bakes taste as good as they looked? Marks were awarded out of a total of 40. There was much anticipation from the audience as Mr Morrish (Headteacher), Ms Fowler (Deputy Headteacher), Mr D Herbert (professional chef) and Mrs J Biggs (representative of CMC School food) came to a final decision – at the sound of a drum roll the winner was announced!

In third place was Class 3F with their creation of a Cadbury Double Decker bar. In second place came 6W with their WW2 William Savage Memorial cake and in first place was Class 5E with their Devilishly Delicious Blueberry Boleyn Tudor theme cake. The judges agreed that the winning cake was well packaged and very tasty and awarded their entry 38/40! 5E were presented with a prize and a certificate. Many congratulations and well done to all our bakers.
