In November 2013, Year 1 children began a Child Pedestrian Training scheme led by Sandwell Metropolitan Borough Council. Karen Hale visited Year 1 to help to launch the scheme by talking to the children about road safety. She read them a story, talked about different ways to cross the road and taught them a song.

The children have taken part in three different sessions over recent months; ‘How to find a safer place to cross’, ‘How to deal with parked cars’ and ‘How to cross safely near junctions’. The training concluded on Wednesday 4th June and all children who have participated and completed the course have been awarded with a certificate and a badge.

This experience has been running for a minimum of 8 years in the authority and VPA are proud to have been a part of it, as our children are shown how to stay safe on the roads and surrounding areas. If by doing the training one child is prevented from having an accident crossing the road, then it is definitely a worthwhile experience. Ask your child in Year 1 how to cross roads safely, as they now have all the answers!
